What got you started in advertising?

Growing up I had a lot of interests, so when it came time to decide on a career to pursue it was a little difficult. I managed to narrow it down to artist or psychologist. I chose artist. Probably a good choice, because as I began my studies, I started to critique the design and advertising around me. And when I saw good advertising, it made me want to work – to spend just a little more time in my sketchbook and on the computer. (That’s what enjoying your career is all about, right?) I wanted to make good advertising. I wanted to be part of making great brands. I figured this might be a sign that advertising was the career to pursue.

Who was a big influence in your career?

I would have to say my junior high art teacher and my parents. They were always there to support me in my exploration of various mediums whether they understood it or not.

What attracted you to Ovation?

The people, the work, and their reputation.

How do you come up with ideas and solutions for clients?

I find a way to relate to the consumer and client – to put myself in their shoes. I’m glad I have a good imagination.

What makes a great brand?

A great brand is accurate and consistent. It will match the company’s goal in every way –from its mark, to its product, to its employees.

What driving career goals do you still have?

Learn something new every day.

What's your biggest pet peeve? (work or personal)

Eating and driving at the same time. Talking on a cell phone and driving at the same time. Reading and driving at the same time. Doing anything while driving that isn’t driving.

What talent do you wish you had?

Do I have to pick just one? I wish I could speed read. I also wish I could sing and play the piano.

If you had to live on a desert island, what would you miss most?

I would miss a lot of things, so instead I’ll tell you what I wouldn’t miss: cell phones ringing, air conditioning, and waiting in traffic.

What can’t you live without?

Caffeine.

Is there any food that helps you think more creatively?

I would have to say Skittles® or pretzels. Finger food that doesn’t distract me by getting my hands dirty, but keeps my hands busy when I’m concentrating.

What’s your favorite sports team?

I don’t have favorite teams so much, but my favorite sport to watch is soccer. I like its intensity, teamwork, and energy.

If you could spend a day with any person, living or dead, who would it be and what would you do?

My grandmother. I would like to revisit places we went to together and talk about everything we’ve missed.

Do you have any pets?

Not currently, but I grew up with dogs. I plan on being a pet owner again soon. I’m particularly fond of Boxers.

What was growing up like for you?

I grew up in central Wisconsin with my parents and one younger brother. I was encouraged to be active and independent, so I participated in a variety of sports, and in between school, practice, and games, I worked. I most enjoyed our family vacations every summer and camping.

What do you do for a good time when you’re not working?

Anything outdoors. I particularly enjoy hiking along the bluffs.

Do you have any kids?

Not yet, but I’m planning on maybe...oh, let’s say five!

What advertising/catalogs do you most admire?

Who doesn’t find Apple’s advertising and package designs for the various iPods intriguing? I also enjoy the Mini Cooper ads.

What are your favorite Internet sites?

Brandchannel.com, Adage.com

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Japan. I’ve always been fascinated with the culture and art of Japan. I roomed with a Japanese exchange student in college. I’ve since been eager to visit and learn even more about the Asian lifestyle and art.
